Hip Hop Saves Lives (HHSL) is a
Social Entrepreneurship that re-
instates the original purpose of
Hip Hop. We do this through
educating youth on social issues.
Why, because Hip Hop was
birthed from a Peace Treaty.
The Ghetto Brothers, a gang
formed to create peace
between rival gangs.
It was founded by Yellow Benji
and Karate Charlie.
The head peacemaker was
Black Benji who was killed while
trying to mediate a
vicious gang fight.
Black Benji was loved by many
gangs for his dedication to peace,
so many gangs offered help for
revenge. Even the Ghetto Brothers
wanted revenge. However,
Black Benji's mother spoke and
said her son died for peace,
so if you love him stand for peace!
So a Peace Treaty between 42 gangs
at The Boys Club on Hoe Avenue
in the South Bronx was
held on Dec 8th 1971.
To maintain the treaty the gangs
agreed to meet every Friday and
Saturday night in the park and
party together. These parties
created the culture of Hip Hop.
We first educate all youth in this
Gang Peace Treaty. We view those
peace makers as everyday heroes
who inspired our curriculum.
